Title:COMMUNICATION WITH PATIENT ON MECHANICAL VENTILATION
Abstract:Theoretical basis: Mechanical ventilation is a method to mechanically assist patients with difficulties in spontaneous breathing due to various causes. Communication to mechanically ventilated patients is often interrupted because of inserted artificial airway. Therefore the patients experience communication as an obstruction which badly influences their accommodation and well-being in the hospital. A nurse, familiar with peculiarities of such a patient, can by using acquired knowledge and skills essentially contribute to a more efficient medical care. Aim: The aim of the theoretical part of the thesis is to present and describe the ways of communication to a mechanically ventilated patient. The survey analysed in the empirical part defines the level of knowledge among male and female nurses regarding patient communication along with encountered difficulties. Methods: The method used in the thesis was descriptive. The anonymous questionnaire provided the necessary data for the research part. The survey was carried out among the staff members of the Intensive Care Unit of Bolnišnica Topolšica hospital. Results and discussion: The results of the survey indicate that the medical staff members know the ways of communicating to mechanically ventilated patients. However, due to the continuous lack of time they find it hard to provide good quality communication and would therefore like to additionally educate themselves. The most common problems that occur are the following: time shortage by the staff, communication problems by the patient. It is evident from the survey that improvement of communication could significantly be influenced by providing sufficient number of medical staff members.
