Abstract:Železnica je imela do začetka 20. stoletja velik vpliv na gospodarski razvoj regij in držav. Države so po drugi svetovni vojni zaradi velikega gospodarskega pomena prevzele nadzor nad njo.

Title:THE INFLUENCE OF TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS ON RAILWAY TRANSPORT - A CASE OF MAGLEV TRAIN
Abstract:Since the beginning of the industrial revolution until the early 20th century, railway had huge influence on progress of regions and countries. After the Second World War countries wanted to control railways because of their influence on economy. With emergence of new transportation, railways lost competitiveness, mainly because of the inability to adapt to new requirements. But meaning of the railway is rising again, due to increasing ecological awareness. The railway is one of most ecologically efficient options of transport. The European countries realised that competition on the railway market would improve its effectiveness. After the reform of the railway system countries kept infrastructure in their control but are obligated to allow access to any company, which wants to offer transportation services and is meeting safety requirements. Railways were also influenced by technological progress, as new technologies enabled higher speed and safety and made the railway system more efficient. Passenger railway transport experienced rapid rise with the emergence of high-speed trains. With technological progress a new sort of train has emerged. Maglev trains levitate on magnetic field. Maglev is, compared to conventional trains, faster, safer, and more comfortable and energy efficient transportation option. A lot of countries still prefer conventional rail over maglev trains because of the high investments in infrastructure. Unlike other countries, China opted for development of the maglev train. In 2003 the first public line was opened. It was successful and Chinese are already constructing extension to the existing line. Japan also made plans for the construction of their maglev line, which is planned to be in public use by 2027. Although there is also interest for maglev from Europe and America, at the moment its use is limited to Asia. Because of the great interest in maglev trains many authors consider it as the transportation mode of the 21st century.
