Title:IMPACT OF GLOBAL ECONOMIC CRISIS ON ECONOMIC GROWTH OF SLOVENIA
Abstract:Financial crisis that began in 2008 in the U.S. due to the interconnectedness of global economies quickly spread around the world. Cause of the crisis was the boom of housing bubble because of the rapidly growing real estate market that was generated by easy credit lending and low interest rates. Since real estate was constantly rising it was considered to be a safe investment. However, when borrowers were not able to continue repaying loans, excess supplies were generated, which the banks could not sell. Lending activity was suspended, which was reflected in the real sector and ultimately economic activity declined. The crisis has spread into the European Union. Economic activity rapidly declined in a very short period of time, which forced the EU governments to act. The first step was primarily related to the settlement of banks to use monetary and fiscal tools to unfreeze credit markets and to stimulate economic activity, which has so far brought little progress. In the long run, the EU is committed to develop a organization that would assume the role of supervising the financial systems of the EU Members. Slovenia has been hit by crisis through international flows. As Slovenia is heavily export-oriented, reduction of all components of the expenditure structure has led to decline of gross domestic product. Rising of unemployment rates, budget deficits and debt consolidation, resulted in reducing of the competitiveness of the Slovenian economy in the wider international environment. Slovenia is confronted with some significant challenges. It must accept some important structural reforms that will restart the economic growth.
