Title:ERASMUS LIFESTYLE - ERASMUS SUBCULTURE - ERASMUS GENERATION
Abstract:The graduation thesis deals with the study of students who have participated in the Erasmus exchange scheme, a programme of the European Commission through which students of higher education can carry out part of their study obligations abroad. In addition, the purpose of the exchange is implementation of part of individual’s studies or practical internship abroad as well as getting to know the cultures and nationalities, learning of the language and preparation for independent life, either in home country or abroad. In the graduation thesis we also try to find out if Erasmus students develop a distinctive lifestyle. What is more, we find out which are the characteristics in this lifestyle that is different from an ordinary lifestyle. Lifestyle is a way of implementation of one's life. Furthermore, the thesis deals with the values which Erasmus students develop or strengthen during the Erasmus exchange. The values in the thesis are understood as a general belief about what is good and desirable in society. Values and lifestyle together form an element of subculture. Subculture is a group of people who are following a different way of life; pursue different values as well as style of dressing, way of speaking and style of music. All these characteristics are sometimes in contrary with the wider society and culture in which the group of people exists. Since we assume that Erasmus students develop a distinctive lifestyle and specific values, the thesis tries to place Erasmus students into sociological treatment as a subculture. Therefore, we try to discover if a group of individuals who experience Erasmus exchanges, could be named an Erasmus subculture through a variety of sociological subcultural concepts. Lastly, Erasmus programme is celebrating 25th anniversary this year and already more than 2 million individuals have participated in it. As the number will rise even more – up to 3 million, until the end of 2013/2014, some of academics speak about Erasmus generation. For this reason, the graduation thesis deals with the characteristics of Erasmus generation and if individual Erasmus students feel as a part of this generation.
