Title:CHRISTIANITY AND ITS ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE ENVIRONMENT
Abstract:Discussions connecting ecology and religion spawned from the American historian Lynn White’s article (1976) in which he blamed the Western Christian Church for having an immense impact on the trend of social development which brought about the environmental situation we are facing today. While studying the history of development of Christianity and Christian thought, especially regarding its attitude towards the environment, we have discovered that throughout history each branch of Christianity established its own relationship with the natural environment. It seems that Protestantism emphasized the instrumental attitude towards the environment most of all. Catholicism treated nature as something a man can mold as they please. Our data on Orthodoxy indicate that throughout history it has treated nature as divine. Today, however, we can note that, at least in official statements and views, all branches of Christianity are aware of the importance of keeping nature intact as much as possible. Data analysis, however, shows that on the global scale, there are slightly more of those who put human well-being before the protection of nature among the Christians in comparison to those who consider themselves as non-religious.
