Abstract:V okviru raziskave smo spremljali koncentracijo kortizola pri 10-letni kobili toplokrvne pasme.

Title:The content of cortisol in the saliva of recreational trail riding horses as an indicator of the stress state
Abstract:In the present study the cortisol level was monitored in a 10-year-old mare of warm-blooded breed. The main purpose of the study was to assess the intensity of stress during recreational trail riding. Samples were taken in the morning and evening at the same time in four successive phases of activities. In the first phase, samples were taken when the horse was in his box stall. In the second phase, the samples were taken during the recreational trail riding. In the third stage, samples were taken 10 minutes after the end of the activity. In the fourth phase, the samples were taken one hour after the end of the activity. Cortisol concentration in saliva was determined using a commercial kit (Cortisol ELISA 2009). Average morning concentration of cortisol during inactivity was 0,1358 µg/dL and average evening concentration was 0,0986 µg/dL. Average morning concentration during trail riding was 0,2792 µg/dL, whereas in the evening the average concentration was 0,2733 µg/dL. Highest concentrations of cortisol were measured 10 minutes after the activity since the average morning concentration measured was 0,3592 µg/dL and average evening concentration 0,2343 µg/dL. An hour after the activity average morning concentration was 0,1988 µg/dL and evening concentration was 0,1667 µg/dL. The results indicated that the day night rhythm has a large effect on the concentration of cortisol in the saliva. However, the intensity and duration of the activity gave the same result irrespective of the time of sampling. Based on our results we can conclude that the activity of the animal did not cause any significant increase in stress.
