Title:ROLE OF WALKING IN SENSOMOTORIC DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN
Abstract:The thesis The Role of Walking in the Sensorimotor Development of Children is a theoretical work. The aim of the thesis is to present in detail the role of walking in the sensorimotor development of children, as well as to determine why sensorimotor development is so important for the development of walking skills. The methodology applied for the thesis was the comparative and descriptive method of research. We provide some general findings about physical movement and how parents influence a child’s movement, define walking as a natural form of movement and walking in the preschool period, examine walking in the first and second age period and also provide examples of walking. We focus specifically on the concept of the sensorimotor function and on the operation and development of the sensorimotor function in children. We also describe sensory receptors, which play a key role in the sensorimotor function. Furthermore, we examine the role of walking in sensorimotor development and how the sensorimotor function influences the development of walking skills, as well as the kinesthetic sense, which also plays an important role. Based on the literature reviewed for the purpose of this thesis, we found that walking as a natural form of movement has an impact on the sensorimotor development of children, that walking becomes automatic due to multiple repetitions of the movement, as eventually all the movements become automatic and spontaneous and, finally, that educators play an important role in how walking affects sensorimotor development, as they are among the first people to introduce children to the different movement patterns and share their vast experience with them. The theoretical knowledge acquired has shown that sensorimotor development is not possible without sensory receptors. These very same receptors play a key role in a child’s development, as it cannot take place without them and there is no substitute for their role in it.
