Abstract:Calendula Officinalis vsebuje vrsto zdravilnih komponent, kot so čreslovine, grenčine, steroli, smole, terpeni in flavonoidi.

Title:SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF FLAVONOIDS IN MARIGOLD (CALENDULA OFFICINALIS)
Abstract:Calendula Officinalis contains many healing components, such as tannins, bitter components, sterols, resins and flavonoids. Flavonoids are the most important as they have strong antioxidant effects, which is very important for health. Owing to all these components, this herb has strong healing powers and it stimulates wound healing, cleanses blood, regulates circulation, and has anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects. The aim of this undergraduate thesis is to find, optimize and validate a method for defining flavonoids in the calendula plant and to compare the content of all flavonoids in the samples picked at different lunar phases. With a limited quantity of samples, picked at different lunar phases, we have selected a spectrophotometrical method, i.e. a method for determining flavonoids on the basis of aluminium chloride in methanol. To find out whether the moon has any effect upon the quantity of healing components in plants, we analysed calendula samples, picked at all four lunar phases: at first quarter, full moon, last quarter and new moon. On the basis of the acquired results, it has been established that plants picked at full moon contain more flavonoids than if they were picked at new moon; in dry samples, this portion amounts to 3,7 % and in fresh samples to %. The method based on the aluminium choride in methanol has proved to be suitable for determining the content of flavonoids in the calendula plant.
