Title:IN SITU SIMULATION OF REVIVING - A NEW METHOD OF EMPLOYEES EDUCATION IN NURSING CARE
Abstract:In situ simulations are simulations that are performed in a clinical environment. We performed an in situ simulation of resuscitation and identification of a critically ill patient at the University Medical Center Maribor, specifically at the Department of Cardiac Surgery and the Department of Orthopedics. The clinical simulations were performed with the help of a Laerdal ALS simulator and all the necessary medical accessories used by nursing employees in their daily work. We chose 14 participants to perform the simulations. We were interested in how well they knew the resuscitation protocol and if they knew how to correctly use all the necessary equipment and accessories needed for the procedure. We aimed to find out if there were differences in the implementation of the protocol and the familiarity with the equipment, and if the response times of the simulation differed between the departments. Our findings showed that the participants are well acquainted with the resuscitation protocol and identification of a critically ill patient and that they know how to properly use all the necessary equipment and accessories. The departments performed differently in three implemented procedures. During artificial respiration, differences occurred because the participants did not hold their hands in the correct position for efficient respiration with a bag valve mask (p=0,005), the participants forgot to make sure that everyone present was not standing close to the edge of the bed before beginning defibrillation (p=0,032) and we also discovered a difference in how the participants positioned the needle-free Clave conector syringe while preparing and administrating medicine (p=0,015). The comparison of the response times of the performed simulations did not show any significant differences (p=0,222).
