Title:THE COMPARISON OF NOVELS THE HANDMAID´S TALE AND FILIO IS NOT HOME AND THE TRANSLATION ANALYSIS OF THE HANDMAID´S TALE
Abstract:This thesis titled “The comparison of novels The Handmaid's Tale and Filio is not home and the translation analysis of The Handmaid's Tale” foremost deals with the analysis of both novels in question in regards to feminist literary theory. Both novels are written in dystopian genre, which I first presented, and then I extracted dystopian ideas from both novels that were important for understanding the stories and for further analysis. When dealing with feminist ideas, Toril Moi’s book Sexual/Textual Politics was very helpful to me. The book portrays female Anglo-American and French feminist literary critics and their ideas. I searched for feminist ideas in both novels; these are the idea of one’s own room, which Virginia Woolf used in her essay “A Room of One’s Own”, the idea of a woman-monster of authors Susan Grubar and Sandra M. Gilbert and the idea of binary oppositions male-female, the idea of feminine voice and the images of water as a safe haven of the womb, of which Hélène Cixous had written. After determining feminist ideas, I analysed the style of both novels by searching for symbols and rhetorical figures of speech that reflect those ideas. In the selected chapters I analysed symbols, similes, metaphors, allusions, consonances, assonances and iterations. I searched for euphemisms only in The Handmaid’s Tale, since Filio is not home did not contain enough for analysis. The latter contained more personifications. After analysing symbols and rhetorical figures of speech, I determined their prominent thematic function, because they speak about the importance of woman’s independence and education, the ability of own thinking and expressing, and also about woman’s own decision concerning the body and sex. Grotesque consequences of restrictions for women in all areas and inadequacies of the system of complete patriarchy that limits a woman’s freedom in all aspects are depicted through dystopia. Writing style of both authors is original, therefore, I analysed also the translation of The Handmaid’s Tale, because I was interested in how the style of the original text was kept or lost in the translation. I found that most translation shifts occur right on the level of style, which mainly did not affect the semantics of the text, but in some cases translation shifts affected the macrostructure of the text, especially in the omission of an entire paragraph and inappropriate translations that changed the original meaning.
