Title:FREQUENCY ANALYSIS OF MAKE-UP ART TERMS TRANSLATED TO SLOVENE
Abstract:This thesis examines English make-up art terminology that is entering the Slovene lexicon via the internet. Based on foreign-language material taken from blogs as well as print, a simple glossary consisting of lexical inventory, English explanations and suggested equivalents for transferring the lexemes to Slovene was built. Neologisms were briefly discussed and then excluded from the inventory. Based on the criteria set to serve the purpose of this thesis, a certain number of items was selected from the terminology for a frequency analysis to be performed. The suggested translations of the terms with several possible equivalents were analysed using two approaches; firstly, by following the standard method of comparing the number of occurrences in selected text collections – Gigafida and Nova beseda corpora, as well as documents accessible on the internet, and secondly, by building our own ad hoc corpus using the WebBootCaT tool. The analysis determined instability of the make-up art terminology equivalents and a transfer form technical terminology to jargonistic and colloquial terms was noted. Slovene printed sources show tendency toward using descriptive gloss translations and outdated lexis. The internet users, on the other hand, tend to use short and economical, often non-integrated foreignisms or partially integrated – transmorphemised foreignisms. As unexpected issues occurred while attempting to build the ad hoc corpus of Slovene terminology, we were unable to evaluate the translation equivalents using this method.
