Title:THE EFFECT OF THE CHILD'S CHRONOLOGICAL AGE WHEN ENTERING THE SCHOOL ON HIS COGNITIVE, SOCIAL AND MOTOR DEVELOPMENT IN THE FIRST GRADE OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Abstract:The transition into primary school is an important period for the child, who is then confronted with numerous challenges as of cognitive, social and motor development. In Slovenia, first-graders, starting school, are 5 years and 8 months to 6 years and 8 months old. Research show differences in skills at the beginning of schooling between older and younger children in the classroom, meaning that first-graders show difference in preparation for school. The master thesis shows differences in school skills, based on a sample of 82 first-graders from Celje and Štore municipalities; among children who entered school at the age of five and their peers who entered school at the age of six and were at least six months older than younger first-graders. In doing so, we assumed that the maturation, which is indirectly measured through the chronological age of the children, is an important factor, affecting the state of cognitive, social and motor development of the child in the first grade of primary school and having an impact on readiness of the child for school. We have shown that the child's chronological age when starting school has a significant statistical impact on his cognitive, social and motor development in the first grade of primary school. We have also analyzed the influence of gender on children's readiness to start school, and have realized that girls in the first grade of elementary school, on average, show a higher level of cognitive, motor and social development than boys. We have studied interaction of gender and age on all dimensions of readiness for school, and have come to the conclusion that the gender compared to chronological age has a much lesser predictive value of a child's functioning in the first grade of primary school.
