Title:THE IMPACT OF ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL FACTORS ON TURKISH LIRA EXCHANGE RATE
Abstract:For the past decade Turkey has been portrayed as an example of success amongst developing countries. Its economy rose dramatically between 2002 and 2006, with an average growth of 7.2 percent per year. Credits can be attributed to the successful reform program, implemented with assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which helped to overcome a severe financial crisis from 2001. With high economic growth and the size of its economy Turkey became one of the twenty largest economies in the world. After more than two decades of battling high inflation, which averaged 75 percent between the years 1990 and 2001, Turkey entered a period of single-digit inflation and successfully denominated its currency. Unfortunately, this picture has changed significantly. Turkey has turned from an exemplary emerging market county into a country that is grabbing headlines with stories of economic decline, political instability and financial vulnerability. Decline in foreign investment for 9.5 billion USD from 2007 and rising inflation to almost 10% had an impact on its currency value, which has in ten years’ time (until 2014) depreciated for 67% against euro. In 2014, Turkey's growth was only 2.9 percent, while its competitors, India and China, reached an impressive 7.5 and 7.4 percent respectively. For the longest European Union candidate status holder, problems in relation with its neighbours are accumulating. So far the government has not implemented any of the much needed structural reforms to reduce government debt, its dependence on foreign investment, facilitate export and regain the strength of Turkish lira.
