V teoretičnem delu smo skušali čim bolj celovito predstaviti značilnosti budizma na Zahodu in vse do sedaj zbrane informacije o budizmu v Sloveniji.

Title:BUDDHISM IN SLOVENIA: CHARACTERISTICS OF THE COMMUNITIES, THE BELIEFS, AND THE PRACTICES
Abstract:The basic aim of the thesis was to present the basic characteristics of Buddhism in Slovenia, as well as establish to what extent these match the trends of (new) Western Buddhism in Northern America (the USA). Special attention was given to Slovenian Buddhist organisations and meditation groups as well as their members and sympathizers. In the theoretical part, the characteristics of Buddhism in the West, as well as all known information on Buddhism in Slovenia were presented comprehensively. In the empirical part of the thesis, the characteristics of Slovenian Buddhists and Buddhist sympathizers were researched using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods of research. For this purpose, a survey questionnaire was used, as well as an analysis of secondary data, participant observation, and the comparative method. It was established that among Slovenian Buddhists and Buddhist sympathizers, women, individuals aged 30–50, the highly educated, people with left-wing political orientation, and those from the urban environment are represented in disproportionately large numbers. It was also established that Slovenian Buddhists and Buddhist sympathizers started getting interested in Buddhism especially because of the influence of Buddhist literature and lectures, as well as their own desire for spiritual growth and fulfilment. The majority comes from Roman Catholic and non-religious families, and they do not necessarily consider themselves Buddhists. Regarding the Buddhist practice in Slovenia, the majority of practitioners mostly uses various forms of meditation. It was identified, however, that for approximately one quarter of Slovenian Buddhists and Buddhist sympathizers, this means a very intensive religious practice, which also includes more complex Buddhist practices, e.g., prostrations, prayers, visualisations, purification practices, and also offerings. It was also determined that Slovenian Buddhists and Buddhist sympathizers do not necessarily believe in some of the basic teachings of Buddhism, such as karma and reincarnation, although almost all of them agree that the ultimate goal in life is enlightenment, along with the intent of helping all sentient beings as much as possible. Regarding the described, as well as some other characteristics, analyses showed that Slovenian Buddhists and Buddhist sympathizers are a relatively homogenous group since there are only few (small) differences regarding gender, type of accommodation, and education. The main conclusion reached in the end was that the basic characteristics of the Slovenian Buddhist community match the characteristics of the Buddhist community in Northern America (the USA) to a large extent.
