V raziskavo smo vključili 59 učencev 4. in 5. razredu Osnovne šole Kamnica in 83 študentov razrednega pouka Pedagoške fakultete Univerze v Mariboru. Z anketo smo najprej preverili njihovo predznanje, odnos in predstave o rastlini in njeni uporabi. Učenci in študenti so bili nad učno enoto navdušeni in si želijo več tovrstnih aktivnosti.

Title:MODERN BIOTECHNOLOGY AT SCHOOL: ALOE VERA
Abstract:Aloe is a fascinating plant of many uses that is produced in the Mediterranean region of Europe but is not very well-known in Slovenia. One of the ways to increase interest in this plant and its products is to include it in the teaching process. Thus, a teaching unit was prepared as part of this thesis, incorporating the biotechnology of aloe (Aloe vera) that can be used for the purposes of a natural science or technology day. The aim of the thesis is to establish what effect the teaching unit has on the participants’ attitude towards and knowledge as well as their perception of this plant. The research involved 59 4th and 5th grade pupils of Kamnica Primary School and 83 students of Primary Education at the Faculty of Education, University of Maribor. A survey was conducted to check their attitude towards as well as prior knowledge and perception of the plant, and its uses. The survey was followed by a presentation of aloe, its production, processing and uses, and an explanation of its efficacy as a home remedy. After the presentation and demonstration, we prepared a drink made out of aloe leaves. After a month, another survey was conducted among the pupils and students. It was concluded that their knowledge of aloe had improved, as had the participants’ attitude towards and perception of the plant. The pupils and students were very pleased with the teaching unit and would like to be included in similar activities more often. Their responses also indicated that such activities contributed to sustainable knowledge. The teaching unit is appropriate for children of the first and second three-year cycle of primary school as well as higher levels.
