Abstract:Razvojno nevrološka obravnava, znanje in delovno specifične kompetence, značilne za to delo, slabo poznavanje širine fizioterapevtske stroke med mladimi ter kompleksnost in širina fizioterapevtskega poklica, ki je že davno prešel meje izvajanja splošne prakse, so bile osnovno vodilo za pisanje tega dela.

Title:Development of Decision Model for Physiotherapist Selection in the Field of Child Neuro-Developmental Treatment
Abstract:In writing this paper, we were guided by neuro-developmental treatment (NDT), knowledge and specific working competences required for performing this type of work, and lack of knowledge of the physiotherapeutic profession among the young generation and the complexity and wide scope of duties of physiotherapists that have a long time ago exceeded the sole provision of general practices. This paper seeks to provide a detailed definition of recruitment of human resources engaged in child neuro-developmental treatment (NDT) and answers to questions, such as: how can the appropriate human resources for this profession be provided, what should they be characterised by, and where could they be recruited. The selection support process objective was to provide a detailed analysis of and to specify the competences required for this profession, to define the target groups or to examine the labour market, and select the appropriate selection methods. The main focus of the paper lay in the development of a computerised decision support selection model that would enable recruiters to select the best candidates for child NDT-related vacancies and to specify the advantages of such an approach. This model developed in collaboration with my colleagues for a longer period of time and verified by a pilot testing of ten job candidates proved extremely useful. Variables that appeared in the labour market and in the interest of a company to recruit young personnel, was verified by a questionnaire completed by physiotherapy students of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Ljubljana, focusing in particular on the degree to which the qualifications obtained by the future physiotherapy graduates match the requirements for physiotherapists engaged in child NDT. The results of the questionnaire showed that physiotherapy students do not gain sufficient basic competences and specific knowledge required for professionally performing NDT and working with children with development disabilities. As a result, they are also unable to gain the sufficient amount of experience required for additional NDT education and training. The final conclusion should be reflected upon by all individuals who recruit physiotherapists engaged in NDT and physiotherapists interested in this field of work who are faced with a lack of knowledge and competences. Educational institutions should use our findings as a basis for reflecting how the knowledge required for providing child NDT and paediatric physiotherapy could be both improved and expanded.
