Title:THE CONSEQUENTIAL COMPONENT OF RELIGIOSITY AMONG SLOVENIAN CATHOLICS
Abstract:The purpose of this thesis is to present fundamental typologies and studies on religiosity with main focus on research of consequentiality and privatization of religiosity in Slovenia. Furthermore, it aims to determine the extent to which the consequential dimension of religiosity is present among the Catholics in Slovenia and whether or not this dimension had declined during the period from the beginning of the 1990s to 2011. This is based on definition of consequential dimension of religiosity by Glock and Stark (1965) where the term refers to the secular effect religion has on an individual. The idea of the anticipating a decline in consequential religiosity within the researched time frame came from the theories of the advocates of religion privatization and individualization who noted a modern Europe trend; a drop in church attendance and a decrease in religious life involvement which cause the religiosity of a person to become more private and individualized and, therefore, less compliant to the church-prescribed religious rules. Religious indicators of consequential religiosity taken into consideration were views on (or disapproval of) abortion, euthanasia, pre-marital intercourse, homosexuality, tax fraud, lying for personal gain, and receiving bribery, all of which are seen as sinful by the Catholic Church. Based on a secondary analysis of data, provided by the Slovensko javno mnenje public opinion research conducted between 1992 and 2011, we concluded that the consequential dimension of religiosity still exists and persists (is not yet in decline) among the Slovene Catholics. It was found that the catholic religiousness still affects the religious people's standpoints on acts considered as sinful with the same strength that it did in the early nineties. To be a Catholic means, even nowadays, to be equally diverse in beliefs, or rather in (dis)approval of the issues discussed as the non-Catholics are, same as it was nearly twenty years ago. Based on these findings we conclude that privatization of religiosity at a consequential dimension level, as per our measurements, is not in progress.
