Abstract:Diplomsko delo se ukvarja s postmodernizmom v ameriški poeziji. V prvo generacijo pesnikov newyorške šole štejemo Johna Ashberyja, Franka O'Haro, Kennetha Kocha in Jamesa Schuylerja. Največ prevedenih del v slovenski jezik pripada Johnu Ashberyju, zato je analitični del diplomske naloge posvečen prav njemu. Ihab Hassan navaja enajst lastnosti postmodernističnega dela, in sicer so to nedoločenost oz. nedoločenosti, fragmentarnost, dekanonizacija, izguba jaza/brez-globin-skost, neprezentativnost/nereprezentativnost, ironija, hibridizacija, karnevalizacija, performans/sodelovanje, konstrukcionizem in imanenca.

Title:AMERICAN POSTMODERN POETRY AND SLOVENIAN TRANSLATIONS OF JOHN ASHBERY
Abstract:The graduation thesis deals with postmodernism in American poetry. The beginning of American postmodern poetry is connected to the New York School of poets, which acted in the 60's, when postmodernism was formed. The members of the first generation of the New York School poets are John Ashbery, Frank O'Hara, Kenneth Koch and James Schuyler. The most translated works into Slovenian language belong to John Ashbery that is why the analytical part of the graduation thesis is dedicated to him. Ihab Hassan lists eleven characteristics of a postmodern work, namely indeterminacy or indeterminacies, fragmentation, decanonization, self-less-ness/depth-less-ness, the unpresentable/unrepresentable, irony, hybridization, carnivalization, performance/participation, constructionism and immanence. In analyzing Ashbery's postmodern poem Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror this points have been the basis for the research. In the thesis I confirm the presence of all characteristics except unpresentable/unrepresentable for it can be distinctively understood as a representation, and irony, because Ashbery was not trying to be openly ironic. Poetry translation is the least researched area of literary translation. From the stated above, we can conclude that postmodern poetry translation is even less researched. A good translator must be aware of the problems and challenges they can meet when creating the translation, and as well know the background of the work they are translating with all its characteristics in the source language. The translator of literary works should also have sense for creating literature. Postmodern poetry does not have a definite form, it does not concentrate on metaphor, rime and rhythm, that is why the key meaning for the translator is to keep the form and the meaning of the work. The analysis of the translation deals with translations that changed the meaning in the target language, translations that changed the form of the sentence, translations, because of which the form differs from the original and translations of the English pronoun one.
