Title:ECOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE/IMPORTANCE OF HUNTING AND POACHING AND THEIR ECOLOGICAL AND CRIMINAL ASPECT
Abstract:Hunting is one of the activities that has accompanied humans throughout history. When people developed farming skills and began to domesticate animals, hunting lost its primary purpose, i.e. being a prerequisite for survival. The principal role of hunting today is maintaining wildlife populations and their natural environment, since concern for environmental protection is a reflection of the development of the society. The Wild Game and Hunting Act is the legal basis for hunting and management of hunting species. Wild mammals and birds that are hunted are defined as game and are managed by the Republic of Slovenia. Hunting is defined in our legislation as an activity of sustainable game management that involves conservation, hunting wild game, interventions in the wild game habitat, interventions into populations due to economic, health protection, health and other well-founded reasons. Hunters must adhere to certain rules while hunting. They may only use regulated hunting weapons and my not subject animals to any unnecessary suffering and excessive disturbance during the hunt. The purpose of hunting is therefore not shooting prey species and wildlife causing damage or to collect trophies, but nevertheless there are cases of illegal poaching that law enforcement authorities successfully prosecute and sanction.
