Abstract:Povzetek.

Title:Public attitudes towards migrants in Maribor and Lendava during the refugee crisis
Abstract:Abstract. This master’s thesis discusses the attitudes towards migrants among the residents of Lendava and Maribor within the period directly after the major wave of immigration from the Middle East and North Africa. The data required for the analysis were obtained between 24 April 2016 and 3 August 2016 with the opportunity quota sample (N=338). We divided the adult population of Lendava and Maribor into sub-populations by gender and age in Maribor, and further by nationality only in (etnically mixed) Lendava. These two towns were selected for their geographical position, which had a great impact on the transit and reception of migrants. Consequently, a reception centre was set up in Lendava, which put its residents in a more direct contact with the migrants and with the whole refugee crisis in general than in Maribor. The attitudes towards migrants were measured with twenty statements which indicate social distance, xenophobia and intolerance – these concepts are discussed thoroughly in the theoretical part of this thesis. In the empirical part, the impact of sociodemographic categories, such as place of residence, gender, age, education and nationality, on the attitudes towards migrants were analysed, as well as the impact of psychological authoritarianism. Subsequently, the attitudes towards migrants were compared to attitudes towards some typical ethnic and social groups, like the Germans, Slovenes, Roma, homosexuals, pensioners and students, using the semantic differential. The empirical research showed that (1) the residents of Maribor had a much more positive attitude towards migrants than the residents of Lendava, (2) similarly, the younger population compared to the elderly in both cities and (3) the people with higher education. The analysis of the impact of demographic factors showed that (4) gender and (5) nationality are not statistically significant for the attitudes towards migrants. The analysis indicated that the strongest predictor of (lower) tolerance towards migrants was the indicator of psychological authoritarianism. Moreover, the results showed that the migrants (7) in comparison with the Slovenes and Germans were more likely to be labelled with negative adjectives and (8) were among all the groups covered subject to almost the highest level of social distance, right after the Roma.
