Title:Promoting creativity in teaching slovenian in 6th and 9th grade with de Bono`s CoRT thinking tool
Abstract:In this master’s thesis we dealt with creativity in Slovenian lessons in the Slovenian education system. We presented the concept of creativity and showed why creativity is one of the key competencies of the 21st century that schools should develop and encourage in students and thus empower them, so that after several years of formal education they are prepared for life (and the labour market). The first part of the master’s thesis is based on the use of the descriptive method. In the second (empirical) part, we used five lesson plans for the 6th grade and five lesson plans for the 9th grade to present in practice how CoRT thinking tools can be implemented in Slovenian lessons. We included an interview with two teachers of Slovenian language who strive to promote creativity in pupils in their Slovenian lessons. In the master’s thesis we conclude that the Slovenian education system is rigid and somewhat outdated. Individual teachers recognize creativity as an important competency and try to promote it within clubs and activity days (outside the classroom), but promoting creativity is still not present as an operational objective in the educational system (curriculum). The CoRT 1 and 4 thinking tools, developed by Edward de Bono, a pioneer in the teaching of creative thinking, are useful in Slovenian lessons for teaching literature as well as language. They promote focused creative thinking, teamwork, and tolerance to different opinions in pupils; the tools teach pupils to look at problems from different perspectives, and pupils learn to be aware of the consequences of their own actions. The most commonly used tools are: PMI, OPV, FIP, APC, C&S (from CoRT 1), stepping stone and YES, NO & PO (from CoRT 4).
