Title:Competencies of class teachers for teaching physical education
Abstract:The main purpose of this study was to investigate the competencies of primary school teachers for teaching physical education (PE) by examining if the teachers feel able to teach PE, how individual factors impact the ability, where the knowledge needed to teach PE was obtained, and how this knowledge is advanced. The study is based on a non-probable purposive sample and includes 140 teachers of first-level primary education, which also teach PE. The data were collected in the form of a questionnaire at primary schools in the Podravje region – 110 completely answered questionnaires were used for the analysis. The acquired data were treated on the levels of descriptive and inferential statistics using the SPSS platform for statistical analysis. The results showed that primary school teachers feel competent to teach PE, and consequently, we are discovering that they value the level of their own teaching abilities relatively high. Teachers also point to their own shortcomings in certain areas of the subject, pointing out gymnastics, dancing, and swimming, and despite them being aware of their weak areas and a desire for improvement, their attendance at additional training programmes remains unsatisfactory. The teachers’ preferred method of training is through expert literature and cooperation with sports pedagogues, and they are satisfied with the offer of additional training programmes. They regularly put new skills from training seminars to practice.
