Title:Foreign pupils in slovenian elementary schools
Abstract:Migrations that are happening in the modern world are greatly reflected in primary schools. The number of foreign pupils grows each year and in the school year 2016/ 2017, schools enrolled 8070 pupils who were, because of the legislation, given the status of foreign pupils. The purpose of this dissertation is to make a review of the legislation for educating foreigners in Slovenia and to deepen the knowledge about intercultural dialogue. The goal is also to examine how these pupils are taken care of through practice. We are interested in concrete guidelines for the organisation of class and models of assistance given to teachers and pupils. We are also interested in the well-being of the pupils and the way we can help them as a school and as individuals to ease their transition into the new cultural environment. In the empirical part, we used a questionnaire for foreign pupils and semi-structured interviews with teachers class-masters and foreign pupils for testing the present goals. We established that teacher are to an extent informed about multiculturalism but were not introduced to this topic during their course of studies. The biggest problem is, according to the pupils and the teachers, the lack of knowledge of the language, which they start learning only when school starts or even a month later. The pupils have negative feelings because of this when entering the new school environment, which is linked to their social centre and their self-esteem for learning.
