Title:Emotional intelligence in primary health care providers in the spodnje posavje and dolenjska region
Abstract:Genesis: One´s actions in life, responses to pleasant or stressful situations depend especially on one´s level of personal maturity and emotional intelligence. The goal of this research was to determine the level of emotional intelligence of the health care providers in basic health care and how it affects the assessment of interpersonal relationships. Research methodology and methods: The research was based on a quantitative research approach, and the methods of description, synthesis and comparison was used. For data collection a questionnaire was formed, which was based on a review of Slovene and foreign scientific literature and for assessing the level of emotional intelligence a standardized questionnaire was used. The study included 110 health care providers from the health centres of the spodnjeposavska and dolenjska regions. Results: Among the interviewed the dominant group were women (82.7 %) with a higher professional education (55.5%). 25.5% of all respondents are between 20 and 30 years old and 29.1% have up to 10 years of service. The results demonstrate that the average level of emotional intelligence achieved is 3,873. Considering that the average value is 3, we can observe that the achieved level of emotional intelligence of the health care providers is quite high. We deduce a small and positive correlation between a general level of emotional intelligence and the assessment of interpersonal relationship (p=0.092). Discussion and conclusion: The key role to being able to adapt quickly in this time of rapid change, plays continuous education on emotional intelligence because emotional intelligence has proven to be very important for the ability to communicate adequately with patients and colleagues.
