Title:Informal hiring practice: experience and attitudes of Slovenian youth
Abstract:The main purpose of this master’s thesis was to highlight the role and extent of informal hiring practice by analysing experience and attitude of Slovenian youth. The focus of this thesis is the role of connections that help an individual in the hiring process. The theoretical part of this master’s thesis presents youth labor market and its peculiarities, the role of the social capital in recruitment process, a variety of search methods and their efficiency. However, the focal points are advantages, disadvantages and efficiency of informal hiring practice. Our research consists of the analysis of our own survey (n=109), semi-structured interviews (n=7) and results from the Youth Study Southeast Europe 2018/2019 (n=10.876). Based on the results, we can assume that youth in Slovenia use formal methods more frequently than informal methods. They can expect most valuable help from friends and relatives. International comparison showed that countries with more severe economic condition express higher levels of importance and need for connections when seeking an employment. Young employed adults who used connections think that meritocratic factors are more important in private sector, while connections are more useful and present in public sector. Full time contracts are additional factor that impact perceived importance of connections. Informal methods prove as economically functional practice.
