Title:Conceptual understanding of students in mechanics
Abstract:Preconceptions have been studied in various fields of physics. In order to know students' pre-conceptions, it is necessary to conduct research using conceptual tests of a particular area. In this master thesis, we deal with students' preconceptions and understanding of mechanics. Mechanics is the oldest branch of physics that studies forces and motion as applied to bodies. There is high number of preconceptions and its understanding is required for successful learning of other areas. We are based on the results of educational research related to the implementation of the Force Concept Inventory (FCI) test, which was designed to test understanding of the concepts of Newtonian mechanics and has been widely used in the United States, high schools, and universities. Through six chapters, we also present models of teaching that differ in the performance of the test results. Also, we will present curricula for elementary school and high school (gymnasium), in which we deal with the fundamental concepts of mechanics, in Croatia and Slovenia.
Keywords:physics teaching, mechanics (Newtonian), preconceptions, conceptual tests, Force Concept Inventory (FCI) test.
