Title:The impact of using computers and mobile phones on mastering English
Abstract:The purpose of the master's thesis was to determine whether the use of a computer and a mobile phone has a positive influence on the learning of English as a foreign language in terms of improving oral communication and writing skills of this language. The study presented the views of 5th and 6th grade elementary school students regarding the use of the Internet, computer and online video games and mobile applications and their impact on English as a foreign language. The survey included 237 students out of five different elementary schools. The research was based on a quantitative method of the pedagogical research. By using a questionnaire we distributed to 5th and 6th grade elementary school students, we found out that students use mobile phones much more than computers. More than two-thirds of the questioned students watch videos in English, listen to music in English, and play games in English every day. The majority of students watches videos in English, listens to music in English, and plays games in English every day. We established that more than half of all students agree that using applications, playing video games, reading, listening or watching blogs, and watching videos in English improved their knowledge of English as a foreign language. The study indicated that the students feel their English skills, gained at school, helped them in their use of a computer and a mobile phone where the contents of games or various applications are in English and that they have learned a lot of additional vocabulary and linguistic structures that were not acquired during English lessons at school by using their computer and mobile phone.
