Title:Illegal destruction of forests
Abstract:Be it in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia or the Americas, forests are a crucial ecosystem relied on by animals as much as people. Regardless of location, every continent faces the same problem – illegal logging. In a world beset by the ever more devastating effects of climate change, illegal logging should have been banned long ago; yet the media tells another story. This thesis will describe illegal logging, the consequences thereof, and the international initiatives that have been adopted in order to rectify the problem. To this end, we employ a methodology incorporating descriptive, compilatory, inductive-deductive, synthetic and comparative methods. We analyse a diverse range of sources reporting on illegal logging and unsupervised forest fires, as well as the effects on the security and stability of the environment. Because of the dynamic nature of the situation, we focus primarily on the time period of the last five years. We conclude that despite an increasingly positive response from the international community, the hectarage of destroyed forest has increased. In contrast to the many international treaties promising forest regeneration, we find that if the current trend continues, the consequences are likely to be extremely damaging for the entire world. Developing countries and communities reliant on forests for survival are likely to be the most vulnerable. Therefore, we prepare several recommendations. Firstly, that more effort needs to be invested into rooting out corruption and punishing companies which do not respect national and international law with regard to timber trade. Secondly, to implement stronger protections for forests, utilising technology to this end. Thirdly, to protect eco-activists, indigenous communities and police officers. Finally, we recommend improving forest management with an eye to increasing the efficiency of food and water distribution worldwide.
