Abstract:Uvod: Intravenske kanile običajno vstavljamo v povrhnje vene zgornjih in le izjemoma spodnjih okončin. Metode: Uporabili smo sistematični pregled tuje strokovne literature in izbrali deskriptivno in korelacijsko metodo dela s kvantitativno metodologijo. Članke smo iskali v mednarodnih podatkovnih bazah CINAHL, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Medline in Google Učenjak. S pomočjo PRISMA-diagrama smo dobili vključitvene članke v analizo in izvedli kritično oceno člankov.

Title:Relationship between intravenous cannula size and injection site to incidence of phlebitis
Abstract:Introduction: Intravenous cannulas are normally inserted into superficial veins of the upper extremities and rarely into those of the lower extremities. The most common complication after the insertion of the intravenous cannula is the incidence of phlebitis. The purpose of the final work is to research the incidence of phlebitis in connection with the intravenous cannula size and the selection of the injection site. Methods: We used a systematic review of professional literature and selected the descriptive and correlation work method with quantitative methodology. We searched for articled in international databases CINAHL, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Medline and Google Scholar. With the help of the PRISMA diagram, we obtained inclusive articles into the analysis and performed a critical analysis of the articles. Results: We used 8 researches of a total of 348. The most common incidence of phlebitis was at the injection site of the cubital vein (72,2 %), this was followed by the veins metacarpalis dorsalis. A rarer incidence was found at the veins of the forearm (24.7 %), the cephalic vein (18 %) and the basilica vein (14 %). At the veins of the lower extremities, the incidence of phlebitis was 3.1-56.6 %. The most common incidence was with the intravenous cannulas 18 G and 20 G (16-63 %). A rarer incidence was found with intravenous cannulas 16 G and 22 G (12-22 %). Discussion and conclusion: The size of the intravenous cannula and selection of the injection site directly influence the incidence of phlebitis. It is important to select the smallest intravenous cannula, which will still suit the purpose. The incidence of phlebitis is most commonly present at the injection site in bend areas.
