Title:Cyberloafing among employees in Slovenia
Abstract:Cyberloafing is the use of the Internet for private purposes at the workplace and consists of visiting different websites or other cyber activities that are not connected to work tasks. The construct was empirically proven to include all mobile devices which are used during work hours by employees and are not necessarily provided by employers. Cyberloafing becomes deviant when organizations recognize it as a possible threat and when it causes financial loss due to unproductivity or inappropriate use of information communication technology. To achieve efficient managing of cyberloafing, it is essential to understand the phenomenon, its presence, and its possible impacts on it. To address such questions, we conducted an online survey on cyberloafing among employees in Slovenia. 381 employees, who do cyberloafing approximately 5 percent or up to 20 minutes of their work time participated in the study. Most often, they visit websites that are not connected to their work tasks, follow websites with daily news, and use instant messaging applications. The analysis of demographic factors suggests that gender and age have a significant impact on cyberloafing, while the level of education has no impact on it. Due to the ongoing world epidemic, we conducted additional research on cyberloafing during working from home in the time of the COVID-19 epidemic, which was proven to be more frequent than cyberloafing at an ordinary workplace. Moreover, there is a positive relation between cyberloafing at the ordinary workplace and cyberloafing during working from home in the time of the epidemic. In conclusion, guidelines for further research and suggestions to organizations for managing cyberloafing are discussed.
