Title:Attitude to multilingualism among the multilingual population in the Lendava region
Abstract:In Prekmurje, it is crucial to find and preserve the harmony among various nations. We must leave behind the injustices that may have happened to us in the past, since they obstruct the development of our small community. Keeping in mind the future of all nations living in Prekmurje, cooperation and setting common goals is crucial. The purpose of this Diploma Thesis is to determine only the self-distinction between the people of Lendava who grew up in two or more languages. My research features analyses, life stories, experience and biographies of those affected, as well as their memories linked to multiple identities and languages. An empirical study will be conducted with the help of bilingual citizens. The relation between identity and language will be illustrated with concrete examples. The original languages and their prestige in population identification will be highlighted. The theoretical part presents the theories regarding the terminology and concepts of multilingualism, where the relevant terms will first be explained from a sociological point of view so that they can be contextualized in language. In the practical part of the Thesis, the interviews are used to show a subjective insight into the language and identity, then these are further linked to the theory. Based on the results, conclusions are drawn, particularly involving language education and language policy. I hope that my work will contribute to a better understanding and awareness of the importance of multilingualism and its impact on human life.
