Title:Opinions of slovenian teachers on the possible introduction of finnish didactic solutions in the slovenian school space, with an emphasis on mother tongue learning
Abstract:With its educational system, Finland has been achieving great results in international programs such as PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) and PIRLS (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study) from the beginning of this century and prompted a lot of interest around the world. The country has been a good role model to many others, also to Slovenia. In Slovenia, we wish for including their didactic elements into our school system and therefore improve our own didactic competences of teaching, more specifically in teaching mother tongue in elementary education and advance reading literacy. For the purposes of research in this Master thesis, we culled the fundamental differences between the Finnish and Slovene school systems, with an emphasis on teaching mother tongue in elementary education. Slovenian teachers were invited to think about restructuring the Slovenian school system at the elementary level, with including some of the Finnish novelties. The main aim of the research was to get teachers’ responses to these changes, including how would the implementations look like and what these changes would bring. Eleven elementary level teachers were asked to participate. Five teachers were from the first educational period and six from the second. The main method was a semi-structured interview. The interviews were conducted, transcribed, and analysed. The results show positive acceptance of general changes, especially in the areas of teacher’s reputation and independent decision-making. Some elements in the special didactics area that had already been well-established it the Slovenian space, were known among teachers and well accepted. For other areas that are still less known (e.g., drama, project work), we found out that didactic knowledge is not lacking there. We suggest higher popularising of areas in question for better teacher knowledge for solutions.
