Title:Vinko Globokar and Monolith for Flute
Abstract:The following Master’s thesis, Monolith for Flute focuses on the analysis of the composition Monolith for Flute by Vinko Globokar, who began his musical career as trombonist. Eventually, he also became a composer and his musical journey took him across different cultures. This altogether influenced his peculiar view of the world and music. Moreover, he started researching sound, instruments and instrumental techniques. He perceived the trombone as an extension of his body and applied the similar principle to the composition Monolith for Flute. The composition was created during Globokar’s tenure at IRCAM in Paris, the French Institute for Music and Sound Research, where he was the head of the department for vocal research. He incorporated extended flute playing techniques into the composition, specifically singing and playing. As performing instruments, he used three flutes: transverse, the piccolo and the bass flute. Throughout the performance, the performer changes them during the piece and places the instruments on the table in front of him. The table represents a theatrical element. Furthermore, because of many other works with theatrical elements, we categorize Vinko Globokar in the genre of musical theatre. Most of Globokar’s works were created as a result of experimenting with the new; therefore, we place Vinko Globokar in the avant-garde period, which is considered to be the period of emergence of new forms, methods and techniques of performance.
