Abstract:V magistrskem delu primerjamo neuspešnost nasilnega in uspešnost nenasilnega boja v Indiji. Britanska represija nad domačini in nespoštovanje tamkajšnjih verskih tradicij sta vodili do upora sepojev (indijskih vojakov družbe) leta 1857. Gandhi in Mohammed Ali Jinnah, kasnejši predsednik Muslimanske lige, sta v začetku 20. stoletja stremela k enotni neodvisni Indiji, vendar je sčasoma nastala ideja o ločeni muslimanski državi v 30-ih letih 20. stoletja. Posledično sta nastali dve ločeni državni entiteti, Indija in Pakistan, oba dominiona Velike Britanije.

Title:From a Unsuccessful and Violent to a Successful Non-violent Uprising: From the Sepoy Uprising to the Independence of India : magistrsko delo
Abstract:The Master’s Thesis compared the failure of the violent and the success of the non-violent fight in India. We dealt with the period from the sepoy uprising in 1857 to the independence of India in 1947. The Indian subcontinent was under British East India Company rule from the 17th century onward. The Company annexed several provinces and took power from the ruling Mughal Empire and several other subcontinental leaders. Because of British repression and disrespect towards religious traditions, the British-employed Indian soldiers (sepoys) revolted in 1857. The British bloodily suppressed the uprising, Indian Muslims, however, were blamed for the revolt because the British favoured the Hindus. The relationship between the Hindus and Muslims worsened, but the relationship between the Muslims and the British improved towards the end of the 19th century. Because of the rise of Indian nationalism in the second half of the 19th century, the Indian National Congress was founded to represent the interest of the Indian people. Muslim representation, however, was lacklustre; therefore, the Indian Muslims founded the Muslim League at the start of the 20th century. During the First World War, Mahatma Gandhi returned to India. In 1920, Gandhi started his non-violent fight for Indian independence. With his non-cooperation, civil disobedience, and several hunger strike movements, Gandhi eventually convinced the Indian National Congress to take up his methods and transformed into a genuine political party. Gandhi and the later president of the Muslim League Mohammed Ali Jinnah strived together for a unified, independent India, but over time, the idea of a separate Muslim state emerged in the 1930s. Ultimately, two separate sovereign nations were founded: India and Pakistan, both dominions of Great Britain.
