Abstract:Turizem je strateško pomembna gospodarska panoga v številnih državah. Slednja obsega ekonomsko, družbeno in okoljsko dimenzijo.

Title:The analysis of development potentials and sustainability of tourism in comparable countries
Abstract:Tourism is a strategically important economic sector in many countries. It provides jobs in several industries directly or indirectly linked to tourism, contributes significantly to gross domestic product, tax revenues, economic growth and enhances the visibility of countries in the world. At the same time, tourism is responsible for a high proportion of global carbon dioxide emissions. Various sectors that support tourism development, such as transport, accommodation facilities and other tourism infrastructure activities, contribute to the high carbon footprint of tourism. As a result, the importance of implementing sustainability in tourism is being increasingly emphasised worldwide. The latter encompasses economic, social and environmental dimensions. An important preliminary stage in the process of planning the implementation of sustainability in tourism is the assessment of tourism development potentials. Tourism development potential refers to the capacity of a destination to attract and receive tourists. Tourism development potential is defined as the set of resources that a destination has and that can be transformed into tourism supply and tourism products. In the master thesis, we compared the development potential and sustainability of tourism in Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Estonia. The contribution of the tourism industry has grown steadily in Slovenia over the last decade, especially as a result of international tourist arrivals, which have more than doubled between 2010 and 2019. In Slovenia, tourism directly contributed 5.4% of total GDP in 2019, and 8.5% of GDP when indirect effects are included. Tourism in the Czech Republic had a constant stable growth for almost a decade before the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, tourism in the Czech Republic directly accounted for 2.9% of GDP and employed 239,506 people (4.4% of total employment). Tourism also makes a significant contribution to the Estonian economy, directly accounting for 5.4% of GDP and 4.4% of total employment before the COVID-19 pandemic. Our research in this Master's thesis has confirmed that Slovenia is comparable and competitive with the Czech Republic and Estonia in terms of tourism development potential and sustainability. The results of our research show that these three countries are among the world leaders in the performance of the tourism industry, which is extremely important especially for a small country like Slovenia. We also confirmed, that all three studied countries show good results regarding sustainable tourism. In the research of Euromonitor that included 99 countries, all three ranked between the best 15. We have also confirmed that the three countries studied show good results in terms of tourism sustainability. Among the 99 countries studied in the Euromonitor survey, all three countries ranked in the top 15.
