Abstract:Igra je temeljna dejavnost vsakega otroka. V Bosni in Hercegovini so na veliko večino otrok pazili stari starši, medtem ko so v Sloveniji varstvo otrok organizirali v okviru jedrne družine.

Title:Play and learning of preschool children during the closure of kindergartens due to the covid-19 epidemic from the perspective of bosnian, herzegovinian and slovenian parents
Abstract:Play is a fundamental activity of every child. Besides being the primary means of entertainment, it also serves a crucial role in a child's life right from the beginning. Through play, a child explores the world around them, and it significantly contributes to their development in all areas: motor skills, cognition, speech, emotional and social growth, creativity, imagination, conflict resolution, and more. All developmental domains are important, and apart from biological and genetic factors, a child's environment, especially parents and caregivers, greatly influence them. They must provide the child with enough playtime, appropriately equipped spaces, and toys that positively impact the child's development. In our master's thesis, we were interested in comparing the assessments of 187 parents from three kindergartens in Slovenia and three kindergartens in Bosnia and Herzegovina regarding how they organized childcare during the closure of kindergartens due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We found that significantly more women took care of children during the closure, compared to men. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, grandparents took care of the majority of children, unlike in Slovenia, where childcare was organized within the nuclear family. We did not find significant differences in the time parents spent playing with their children and the games they played with them based on the country. However, Slovenian parents mostly played with their children indoors and in nature, while parents from Bosnia and Herzegovina preferred parks. Slovenian parents statistically allowed their children to play with mobile phones for a shorter time compared to parents from Bosnia and Herzegovina. There were also significant differences in the types of activities children could engage in on the phone based on the country. The results have shown that 71.1% of parents were concerned about homeschooling, and after kindergartens reopened, they appreciated the work of kindergarten teachers more and 86.6% of parents did not observe any negative consequences of kindergarten closures upon their children’s return to kindergarten. We cannot generalize these findings to the entire population of parents in Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina since the sample was opportunistic.
