Title:Anxiety sensitivity as a moderator of the relation between academic stress, emotion regulation and sleep quality
Abstract:Poorer sleep quality is associated with many negative consequences in various areas of life. In the present research, we wanted to gain a better insight into the quality of students' sleep during the exam period and examine the role of perceived academic stress, emotion regulation, and students' anxiety sensitivity. Here, we were mostly interested in whether anxiety sensitivity would turn out to be a vulnerability that would have a significant effect on the relationships between the included constructs. 284 students aged between 19 and 50 (M = 22.33, SD = 3.34) It participated in the research. The results showed that perceived academic stress and level of anxiety sensitivity negatively predicted poorer subjective sleep quality. Of the three dimensions of anxiety sensitivity, only cognitive worry approached the limit of statistical significance in predicting subjective sleep quality, which is consistent with the existing literature. The moderating role of anxiety sensitivity in the relationship between problems with emotion regulation and subjective sleep quality came very close to the limit of statistical significance, which helps us somewhat shed light on the effect of problems with emotion regulation on sleep quality among people with different levels of anxiety sensitivity. Despite the fact that we were unable to prove more complex relationships between the constructs, the present research has value in that it raises awareness of the vulnerabilities that make it difficult for students to achieve quality sleep during the exam period. In the Master's thesis the shortcomings and practical implications of our research have been discussed as well.
