Title:The effects of a brief meditation and breathing technique for mourners with a secure attachment style
Abstract:Mourning is a normative emotional experience that occurs after the loss of a loved one, animal, or object, and is one of the most painful and stressful experiences in life. Even though the grieving process is well researched in professional literature, our review noted a lack of simple, fast-acting and cost-effective techniques for improving the physical and mental health of mourners. The purpose of this Master’s thesis was therefore to study the effects of coherent meditation and the cyclic sighing technique on the grieving process in mourners with a secure attachment style dominated by an internalized ongoing bond with the deceased. We conducted a randomized controlled study in which we assigned 20 participants to either a group that practiced coherent guided meditation daily (the experimental group) or a group that practiced the cyclic sighing technique daily (the control group) for a total of four weeks. We used a mixed ANOVA to examine the effect of these techniques on the intensity of grieving symptoms, emotional regulation, loneliness, post-traumatic growth, and positive and negative affect. The statistical analyses did not show statistically significant effects on the measured constructs, which is attributed to a greater dropout of the participants, the individualisation of the grieving process and also to the shortcomings of the experimental design. Nevertheless, the study has important implications for further research in this field, and at the same time, we have created a lot of material within the Master's thesis that can be used in future projects.
