Title:Comparative analysis of physical characteristics of students in urban and rural schools
Abstract:The aim of the master's thesis was to study the differences in physical characteristics of pupils aged between 6 and 11 years attending urban and rural schools in the Podravska region. The sample consisted of 1755 children, 690 from rural areas and 1065 from urban centres. The variables included in the survey were body weight (BW), body height (HT), skinfold of the upper arm (SFA), body mass index (BMI), sex, age and living environment of the children. Basic statistics were calculated and t-test was used to identify differences between urban and rural children. The results of the analysis showed that there were no statistically significant differences in body measurements between urban and rural children, with some exceptions. For boys in grade 2, the difference in the thickness of the skinfold of the upper arm was statistically significant (p = 0.004), meaning that urban boys have thicker skinfolds than rural boys. For 2nd grade girls, there was also a statistically significant difference (p = 0.05), with urban girls having thicker skinfolds than rural girls. Other body measurements such as height, weight and BMI do not show statistically significant differences. The results show that the living environment is associated with the thickness of the skinfold of the upper arm in some age groups, but the living environment does not significantly affect other body measurements.
