Čeprav so bili Britanci in njihovi politični predstavniki v Avstriji seznanjeni z nasiljem nad Slovenci, so z neukrepanjem zasledovali politiko čimprejšnje stabilizacije Avstrije in germanizacije.

Title:Violence against Slovenes in Austrian Carinthia (1945-1947)
Abstract:This master’s thesis explores the treatment of Slovenes in the Austrian Carinthia by the British occupational authority between 1945 and 1947, focusing on the period leading up to the London Conference in January 1947, during which the Austrian-Yugoslav border demarcation was the topic of their discussions. The research incorporates documents of American and British diplomacy and unpublished primary sources held by the British National Archives in Kew-London and the Archives of the Republic of Slovenia in Ljubljana. Additionally, autobiographical accounts, memoirs of members of the Slovenian minority and newspaper reports of various political orientations – pro-Yugoslav and pro-Austrian – were analysed. The aim of this master's thesis was to shed light on elements of violence during this period that had not yet been thoroughly researched. By analysing the so-called third party and the testimonies of the Slovenes from Carinthia, the thesis illustrates various forms of violence based on selected cases of violence. The post-war period was one of the most challenging for the regulation of minority rights of Slovenes, as Austria was divided into several occupation zones, with Carinthia administered by the British occupational authority. The British guaranteed certain rights and freedoms to the Slovenes through initiatives such as the publication of the Slovene newspaper Koroška kronika, the broadcasting of radio broadcasts in Slovene, the promotion of cultural activities, and the gradual denazification of Slovenes. However, the British authorities’ the slow action, indecision or even collaboration with the (former) Nazis contributed to a certain degree of repression and violence. Even though the British and their political representatives in Austria were aware of the violence against Slovenes, they did not take action, which was part of their policy of stabilising Austria and Germanising it as soon as possible.
