Title:Analysis and challenges of succession of the family business Ajm d.o.o.
Abstract:Family businesses represent a significant part of the economy worldwide, accounting for up to 90 % of all businesses in some countries. In Slovenia, these businesses are mostly micro and small enterprises, which is reflected in their structure and mode of operation. The uniqueness of family businesses lies in their complexity in leadership and management, as business and family life often intertwine. At the same time, interpersonal relationships in family businesses are more intense than in other companies and significantly impact the operation of the business. One of the challenges is the succession process, which is not straightforward and requires careful preparation to avoid conflicts that may arise due to different interests or a lack of competencies among family members. We differentiate between succession in ownership and management, which can occur simultaneously or separately. The transition of a business from one generation to the next represents the greatest challenge, as many businesses do not survive this activity. In this thesis, we will examine, using the example of the company Ajm d. o. o., how timely and strategic planning can impact the company to seamlessly survive the transition period and operate as successfully or even more successfully compared to the previous generation. We will present their key milestones over the course of their operation and outline the process of succession from the first to the second generation. Additionally, we will present their succession options and plans for the transition of the business from the second to the third generation.
Keywords:family business, succession transition, ownership, management, interpersonal relationships in a family business, planning.
