Title:Experimental analysis of a formula student aerodynamic package efficiency
Abstract:In the framework of the thesis, an experimental measurement of the aerodynamic package's efficiency was conducted by testing on the track, using devices to measure dynamic and static forces on the suspension, and a comparison was made between the experimental results and the results of CFD numerical simulations. The main goal of the thesis, and the execution of measurements on the race car, is to determine to what extent we can rely on the results of CFD simulations and how we can best adjust our race car for individual disciplines in the competition based on the results. The measurement methods are described, including the experimental setup, the car setup, and the comparison of measurement results under different conditions. We varied the constant speeds and conducted measurements during acceleration. The forces were measured at different constant speeds, specifically at 50, 60, and 80 km/h. We also performed separation measurements using wool tufts to determine the extent to which the results of CFD simulations can be trusted. It was found that the CFD simulation results can be relied upon when they predict air separation on the wings. The DRS system reduced the downforce in reality by only 6,5 % at a speed of 50 km/h, while the simulation predicted a 41 % reduction at the same speed. In reality, the downforce achieved is also lower than predicted by the simulation. Through the measurements, we recorded an average total downforce of 352,6 N at a speed of 50 km/h. The results obtained from the simulation predicted that it would amount to 450 N. In analyzing the measurement results, we also concluded that there is significant room for improvement in the measurement process, as we discovered that some important factors were not considered.
