Abstract:Ali so turistom fiktivno pretirane pokrajine bolj všeč kot realistične?

Title:Exploring landscape appeal : an experimental comparison of Avatar, China, and Hawaii
Abstract:Do tourists prefer fictionally exaggerated landscapes to realistic ones? The master's thesis investigates the liking of realistic and fictional representations of landscapes using an experimental comparison between photographs of actual destinations in China and Hawaii and scenes from the movie "Avatar: The Way of Water." Processing fluency theory advocates that fictitious, i.e., exaggerated, and fictional landscapes attract tourists more because of their strangeness and uniqueness, in contrast to realistic landscapes on Earth. So, based on this, we formulated hypotheses and surveyed 400 respondents. Their task was to rate the attractiveness of the landscapes shown. While it was expected that fictitious landscapes would be more attractive due to the exaggeration of real, existing landscapes, the results showed the opposite. Although fictitious destinations are likable, the results indicated that the participants preferred realistic representations of landscapes, which triggered a greater desire to visit and with which the participants identified more strongly, aligning with their current and ideal self-image in relation with the destination’s image. The results indicate a strong connection of Slovenians with nature, as they chose authentic and realistic destinations over fictitious ones. In addition, the realistic images of landscapes were of high quality and featured a green/blue color palette, symbolizing Slovenia. The research is a step closer to understanding tourism promotion in Slovenia, emphasizing the importance of reality and consistency of self-image.
