Title:Parents of adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and their experience of parenting
Abstract:In our Master's thesis, we explored how parents of adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) cope with the condition, how the diagnosis affects their parenting practices and family dynamics, and what support systems operate in Slovenia for adolescents with ASD. In the theoretical part, we presented in more detail the characteristics of individuals with ASD, early signs, the diagnostic process, the family environment of adolescents, and how parents cope with ASD. The empirical part presents a study in which the results were obtained through interviews with parents of adolescents. A total of 10 parents participated in the research. The results of the analysis showed that family dynamics changed after the diagnosis was established. Parents emphasize the importance of organization and activity planning, thereby placing great importance on routine in daily activities. According to most parents, their parenting practices did not change significantly after their child's diagnosis, nor during adolescence. We examined family relationships, with parents stating that they became even more united and connected. The research also highlighted the issue of leisure time. According to the findings, parents are not informed about organized leisure activities for individuals with ASD and therefore do not include their children in them.
