Title:Managing multigenerational teams
Abstract:The diploma project explores the complexity of leading multigenerational teams in today’s work environment, where at least four distinct generations—Baby Boomers, Generation X, Generation Y (Millennials), and Generation Z—coexist. Each generation brings its own characteristics, values, communication styles, and expectations regarding leadership and working conditions. Due to these differences, it is essential to understand how leaders can effectively align intergenerational dynamics and foster an inclusive, productive, and motivating work environment. The project presents the key elements of leadership, leadership models and styles, required competencies of leaders, and the specific challenges related to intergenerational collaboration. The importance of leadership based on trust, adaptability, two-way communication, mentoring, and sensitivity to the individual needs of employees is emphasized. In addition to outlining generational differences, the project analyzes the opportunities that such diversity offers—knowledge transfer, greater innovation, increased adaptability to change, and more fruitful teamwork. It highlights the need for leaders to consciously shape an environment that promotes both traditional and reverse mentoring, emotional intelligence, and a deep understanding of the motivational drivers of each generation. In conclusion, the project offers practical recommendations on how organizations can adapt their leadership strategies and employee development efforts to achieve long-term effectiveness and enhance engagement across all generations.
