Title:Preschool teachers' experience with natural materials from the forest
Abstract:The diploma thesis is structured into a theoretical and an empirical section. The theoretical section explores early science education in kindergarten, the significance of nature-based learning and its impact on child development, as well as the concept of the outdoor classroom. Additionally, it delves into the forest ecosystem, detailing seasonal characteristics, the importance of forests to humans, safety considerations, and the forest's role as a stimulating learning environment. The section also examines natural materials found in forests and playrooms, as well as natural materials and toys, and outlining activities that utilize natural materials. The empirical section employs a non-experimental research method to assess the frequency of natural material use from forests in urban and suburban kindergartens, considering different age groups and seasons, based on the experiences of preschool teachers. A total of 111 preschool teachers and teaching assistants participated in the questionnaire survey. The data obtained from the online survey indicates that urban and suburban kindergartens use natural materials from the forest for learning and play; it also shows differences in the use frequency. Furthermore, both the first and second age group use natural forest materials and there was no significant difference. However, there are minimal differences concerning the utilization frequency of these materials as well as the use frequency on diverse surfaces. Most kindergartens incorporate natural forest materials year-round, with the usage being higher in warmer seasons than in the colder.
