Title:Comparison of methods for ergonomic assessment using the example of an auto body shop
Abstract:In this thesis, we analysed two workplaces in a service company specialising in automotive body repair, vehicle painting, and vehicle window tinting, with the aim of comparing the findings of different ergonomic assessment methods. The workplaces were assessed using the KIM, OWAS, RULA, REBA, ALLA, and AULA ergonomic methods. We conducted the analysis using a digital camera and appropriate assessment forms for each method. Additionally, we interviewed the two workers included in the ergonomic assessments and used the Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire to gather data on their pain and potential musculoskeletal disorders that may develop over time. We examined whether the assessments derived from ergonomic methods aligned with the reported pain symptoms of the workers in the observed job roles. A comparative analysis of the findings from each method was carried out. Our results were then compared with findings from other researchers. We found that, among all the methods, the KIM method is the most suitable for assessing tasks in automotive body shops, while the AULA and ALLA methods are not appropriate for such types of work. Furthermore, we found that the KIM method consistently rated the risk of long-term musculoskeletal disorders due to awkward postures higher than the other methods. Based on the test study, we also proposed measures for improving the working environment and provided guidelines for the use of ergonomic aids aimed at reducing the risk of musculoskeletal disorders and work-related pain at vehicle painting and window tinting workstations.
