Title:The Quality of Montessori Kindergartens in the Republic of Slovenia in the Inclusion of Children with Special Needs
Abstract:The current legislation in the Republic of Slovenia does not allow children with special needs to be directed to private kindergartens without a concession, thus preventing private kindergartens from implementing a preschool program with adapted implementation and additional professional assistance. All Slovenian kindergartens that implement publicly valid programs according to special Montessori pedagogical principles operate as private kindergartens, which is why children with special needs are consequently prevented from being included in preschool education programs according to special Montessori pedagogical principles. To address this challenge, we investigated whether private Montessori kindergartens provide a quality inclusive environment for children with special needs. The research was based on structured observation of daily activities, routines and social interactions among children aged 3 to 6, as well as on interviews with professional workers. The findings show that Montessori kindergartens successfully adapt the environment to the individual needs of children, which is confirmed by the high quality of practice rating (6.6 out of 7). This means that these kindergartens offer important opportunities for the inclusion of children with special needs and provide a supportive, inclusive environment tailored to their needs. The results of the research provide a foundation for further guidance regarding the possibility of implementing programs for children with special needs in Montessori kindergartens.
