Title:Experiences of patients and relatives with communication in the neurosurgical field
Abstract:Introduction: This master’s thesis examined the experiences of patients and their family members with communication with healthcare staff in the field of neurosurgery, as these can affect the quality of treatment and the interactions among all parties. Methods: We used a qualitative research methodology, employing a semi-structured interview with a focus group of patients and family members to gather data. We then analysed the interviews and answered the research questions. The study involved 11 patients and 10 of their family members. Results: The patients and their family members noted the professionalism and accessibility of the healthcare staff, as they provided clear information about procedures, potential complications, and next steps, helping to reduce fear and uncertainty. However, some family members reported difficulties in obtaining certain information. Discussion: The results show that the patients and their family members valued their communication with healthcare professionals, primarily due to the empathetic and personal approach of the staff, although they also reported some difficulties in accessing information. Conclusion: Empathetic and clear communication is essential in providing a positive experience for neurosurgery patients and their family members. Despite some challenges in accessing information, the results showed that a personal approach, support, and clear explanations are key to satisfaction and successful healthcare delivery in this context.
