Title:The transition to the four-day working week: challenges and opportunities
Abstract:This thesis explores the transition to a four-day workweek and its impact on employees and organizational competitiveness and strategic development, with a particular focus on an empirical case study of the company Hofer. It examines the advantages and challenges of reduced working hours and analyzes how this model affects the work environment, employee satisfaction, work-life balance, stress levels, and burnout. The empirical analysis, conducted among employees in two Hofer branches in the Styria region, revealed that a shortened workweek has a positive effect on employees’ mental and physical well-being, enhances their motivation, and facilitates better coordination between professional and personal obligations. Employees reported an improved workplace atmosphere and increased focus in completing tasks. Despite these benefits, the transition requires thoughtful planning and organizational adjustments, particularly in terms of task distribution and internal communication. Hofer is presented as a good practice example, where the benefits of the four-day workweek were recognized, while also addressing challenges such as a more intense work pace and the need for clearer communication within teams. The key to successful implementation lies in a strategic approach, leadership flexibility, and continuous support for employees.
